CARING FOR YOUR NEWBORN BABY
Clean your baby’s umbilical cord area with a cotton bud or ball dipped in surgical spirits. Clean the base of the cord where the separation will eventually occur. The more frequently you clean the cord, the quicker it will dry and the sooner it will fall off.
If you haven’t just bathed baby, clean the nappy area and dry well, particularly in all the creases. Then apply a small amount of Elizabeth Anne’s & Purity Petroleum Jelly, Elizabeth Anne's & Purity Barrier Cream or Nappy Rash Cream.
Put baby’s nappy on, ensuring a close fit around
baby’s tummy. Rub some Elizabeth Anne’s & Purity Aqueous Cream or Lotion over baby’s entire body to keep baby’s skin smooth and supple.
If your baby is prone to chafing, then smooth some Elizabeth Anne’s & Purity Baby Powder over baby’s body, especially in the creases (remember to shake the powder into your hands first and not directly onto baby’s body). Your baby is now comfortable and dry and ready to be held and cuddled.
Massaging Your Baby Your baby needs to be held, carried and cuddled. Baby needs your confident, unwavering touch to feel safe in the world and stimulate baby’s development.
Massage is a wonderful and special way of interacting, bonding and communicating with your baby and making your baby feel secure and loved.
Before massaging your baby, ensure that you will not be interrupted; lie your baby on a blanket, duvet or soft towel; and create a loving, relaxed atmosphere by either playing soothing music or singing to baby. Remember, the room needs to be quiet, warm and drought-free.
Use Elizabeth Anne’s & Purity Baby Oil Gel, Elizabeth Anne’s & Purity Aqueous Cream or Elizabeth Anne’s &
Purity Baby Oil to gently massage your baby’s little body using slow and even strokes. There is no rigid way of massaging; every mom has her own style.- Place your hands on the sides of your baby’s neck and soothingly move them down the baby’s body. Gently massage with slow, even strokes
- Gently massage over baby’s tummy area often helps colicky babies
- Hold your baby’s hands lightly between thumb and forefinger and gently massage
- Massage your baby’s arms from hands towards chest
- Gently massage your baby’s feet and legs
- Turn your baby over and massage baby’s neck
When you and your baby have had enough, stop. Your baby does not have to have a complete massage every time. Also remember, if you pick up that your baby is hungry or tired, leave the massage till later or another day because massage, unlike many of other things you do for baby, is not a fixed item on your “to do” list. It is a spontaneous expression of your love and a time when you can bond with each other.
